The goal of Stegreif - The Improvising Symphony Orchestra is to show new ways of being for a contemporary orchestra today: musicians of different genres play without sheet music, without conductors, moving freely in the space and improvising though free arangements of symphonic music.

Their radical recompositions aim to transform the cherished musical heritage sustainably and to expand it with contemporary movements. Musical spontaneity and performative intensity offer a new kind of concert experience to the audience, who are also free to move around the space. With these innovative concert formats, the orchestra is inspiring a growing audience of different ages and target groups.

Since the orchestra was founded in 2015, it has developed at least one new concert program each year and performed at renowned venues such as the Berliner Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Radialsystem Berlin and the FUSION Festival.

It has also developed structured music education concepts. The orchestra regularly runs workshops and children's concerts and has developed joint concert programs with amateurs and young people on several occasions. Stegreif has received several awards, including the Startup Music Prize Berlin 2016, the "D-Bü" competition of students of German music universities 2017 (topic: future of the concert format), Würth Prize 2018 of the Jeunesses Musicales Foundation, fellowship of the #beethoven program of the PODIUM Festival Esslingen 2018-2020, and European Trend Brand of the Year 2019 at the 14th European Cultural Brand Awards.
